Bolton Wanderers

Burnden Way, Horwich, Bolton, Greater Manchester, BL6 6JW

Bolton Wanderers are one of the oldest names in English football, with a history stretching from Burnden Park to the modern Toughsheet Community Stadium. The club enjoyed memorable Premier League years in the 2000s before financial hardship and a long recovery through the lower leagues. Promotion in 2026 brought Bolton back to the Championship for the first time since 2019.

Stadium Overview

The Toughsheet Community Stadium is a modern out-of-town football stadium that has been Bolton Wanderers' home since 1997. Built originally as the Reebok Stadium, it has a symmetrical bowl-style design with four two-tier stands joined at the corners, giving it a very different feel from older town-centre grounds.

The stadium is positioned beside the Middlebrook retail and leisure area and close to Horwich Parkway station and the M61. The design gives good sightlines from most areas, with the West and East sides offering the best traditional side-on views and the ends providing the atmosphere behind each goal.

A hotel is integrated into the stadium complex, adding to its distinctive look. The overall matchday feel is modern, spacious and accessible, though traffic around Middlebrook can make it feel very busy before and after the match.

Away End

Away supporters are normally placed in the South Stand behind one of the goals. The stand is a two-tier end and can hold a large travelling support, with allocations varying by fixture and demand.

Ground guides regularly note that Bolton can make a significant part of the South Stand available for visitors when required, although the usual allocation may be smaller for standard league fixtures. The away end is clearly separated from the home areas and is the part of the ground visiting supporters should head for on arrival.

Coaches and away movement are normally managed around the stadium perimeter, with extra stewarding on high-profile fixtures. Supporters should follow the away club's match-specific guidance for coach parking, collections and entry arrangements.

Getting There

By Road

From the North

Approach via the M6 southbound, then join the M61 towards Manchester/Bolton. Leave at Junction 6 and follow signs for the stadium and Middlebrook. The ground is close to the motorway but traffic around retail parks and car parks can be slow after full-time.

From the South

Use the M6 northbound or M60/M61 route towards Bolton. Leave the M61 at Junction 6 and follow stadium signs for Horwich and Middlebrook. Arrive early if using stadium-area parking because exit queues can be heavy.

From the East

Use the M62 or M60 towards Manchester, then join the M61 northbound for Bolton. Leave at Junction 6 and follow the signs for the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Check motorway conditions before travelling because this route is vulnerable to delays around Manchester.

From the West

Use the A580, M58/M6 or local Lancashire routes to reach the M61. Leave at Junction 6 and follow signs for the stadium and Middlebrook. Post-match congestion is common around the retail park road network.

By Train

Horwich Parkway Station

Horwich Parkway is the clear best station for the Toughsheet Community Stadium. It sits very close to the ground, with services on the Manchester, Bolton, Preston and Blackpool corridor.

Bolton Station

Bolton station is useful for wider connections, but it is not close to the stadium. Supporters arriving there should change for Horwich Parkway, use a taxi, or check matchday bus options.

Walking From Station

Horwich Parkway Station

From Horwich Parkway, the stadium is only a short walk, usually around 5 minutes. Follow signs and matchday crowds towards the stadium and Middlebrook area.

Bolton Station

Walking from Bolton station is not recommended because the stadium is several miles away in Horwich. Use the train to Horwich Parkway, a taxi, or matchday bus services instead.

By Air

Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport is the best airport for Bolton Wanderers. From the airport, use rail services towards Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Oxford Road, then connect towards Bolton and Horwich Parkway. Horwich Parkway is the key station for the stadium and is only a short walk from the ground.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a possible alternative, especially for budget flights. Take onward transport into Liverpool South Parkway or Liverpool Lime Street, then rail via Manchester or Wigan/Bolton depending on timetable. It is usually less direct than Manchester Airport.

Matchday Advice

Bolton is one of the easier Championship away days by public transport because Horwich Parkway station is very close to the stadium, around a short walk from the ground. Drivers benefit from the M61 being nearby, but the retail park, stadium car parks and post-match traffic can make the area slow immediately after full time.

Arriving early is sensible, especially for Saturday fixtures when Middlebrook is also busy with shoppers and cinema or restaurant traffic. Away supporters should use the South Stand approaches and follow steward direction rather than cutting across home turnstile areas.

The out-of-town location means food and drink options are plentiful nearby, but queues and road congestion can build quickly close to kick-off. If driving, check the club's latest parking information as car park rules, cashless payment and availability can change.

Tickets

Home match tickets are sold through Bolton Wanderers' official ticketing system and ticket office. For a neutral, the East or West Stand usually gives the best overall view, with side-on seating and a higher perspective of the pitch.

Supporters wanting more atmosphere would normally look towards the home end behind the goal rather than the quieter side sections. Away supporters should buy through their own club once Bolton release the allocation, with visiting fans normally placed in the South Stand.

If away tickets are available for collection or sale on the day, supporters should follow the selling club and Bolton's match-specific instructions, as collection points and matchday availability can change depending on police advice and expected crowd size.

Stadium Rules

The Toughsheet Community Stadium operates standard football ground regulations, including ticket checks, steward searches, bans on pyrotechnics, restrictions on entering the wrong supporter areas and removal for anti-social or discriminatory behaviour.

Because the stadium sits beside a large retail park and road network, supporters should expect traffic management and steward control around the stadium before and after the match. Fans should use the correct turnstiles for their stand and follow any match-specific safety instructions issued by Bolton or the visiting club.

Alcohol rules and concourse arrangements may vary by fixture, especially where segregation or policing requirements are higher.

Accessibility

Bolton Wanderers publish dedicated disabled supporter information. Wheelchair user spaces are available around the stadium, including elevated platforms in front of the North Stand lower tier and West Stand lower tier, and there is also provision to watch from behind glass in the UK Healthcare Suite.

The club notes pitch-level entry in all stands, but supporters requiring wheelchair bays, accessible parking, easy-access seating, personal assistant tickets or sensory or medical arrangements should contact the club in advance.

Away disabled supporters should usually arrange requirements through their own club when purchasing away tickets, because spaces and parking are limited and fixture-dependent.

Stadium Tours

Bolton Wanderers do offer official stadium tours of the Toughsheet Community Stadium. The club advertises them as behind-the-scenes tours including areas such as the home dressing room, players' tunnel, dugout and pitchside, while also covering Bolton's history from Christ Church FC and Burnden Park through to the modern stadium.

Tours have been advertised with multiple time slots, limited numbers and separate group booking options. Dates, pricing and route can change, so supporters should use the official Bolton Wanderers stadium tours page before travelling.
